LeapFrog is a company that focuses on children’s tablets and they just introduced two new slates: LeapPad 3 and LeapPad Ultra XDi. The former can be seen below and as you can see, it looks quite a bit like a toy.

LeapPad3

LeapPad 3 has a superior CPU compared to its predecessor and judging by its case, it’s protected against rough contact and spills. It uses a 480 x 272 pixel resolution on a 5 inch screen and inside is a 1 GHz CPU. The LeapPad Ultra brings WiFi support and both models come with games, apps, e-books, video and audio content. LeapPad 3 is priced at around $100 and it will be available in July.

Meanwhile, LeapPad Ultra XDi is priced at $130 and will come in 2015. I can see there’s a directional pad on the side of the tablet and also what looks like a front camera and a Home button. There’s a pet game here, a word game, music related activities and the child has a profile set up with his own avatar in the left corner.

The S6 Study Pad is a new learning tablet for children and it comes with a custom UI applied on top of Android. It also integrates 1 GB of RAM, a A31S quad core processor and a few educational applications.

ployer-s6-1

This model relies on an interface that seems to be based on tiles, at least in the section where you get to choose the learning fields. I see there’s geography, history, chemistry, maths, English, physics, politics and biology. There’s also a cloud icon, meaning you can save your sessions in the cloud, as well as some tools and font options. The slate seems pretty sturdy, it has two big speakers at the top and a kickstand integrated.

From what I can see it comes with a microSD card slot, a front camera and even what appears to be a full USB port, although I could be mistaking. We have no price for this model and even if we had one, usually such learning tools are offered with a discount to schools, kindergartens and other institutions where children need tablets.

Both slates come with a carrying frame, that also works as a kickstand and a 15 points capacitive touchscreen, a quad core Nvidia Tegra 4 CPU and 16 GB of memory. The OS here is Android 4.4.4, but there’s a software layer on top, called Blue Morpho. The tablet comes with a dual mode feature, that allows families to switch between the nabi mode and parent mode. The latter runs stock Android and works pretty much like a standard Android slate.

Once you swipe to the right, you’ll each the parental control area and access the nabi mode. This one is a launcher that holds all of the apps that kids would interact with. The nabi system also includes educational apps and games, like the Big Canvas app, that allows kids to draw, create animations and edit videos. There’s the Wings Learning System, used to learn Math, Reading and Writing and providing over 17,000 lessons and 300k questions.

Movies, games and books are also included, for the full package, plus multiplayer board games for the whole family. The Big Tab 20 inch tablet goes for $449 and comes this fall, while the 24 incher goes for $549.

Mitashi isn’t a brand I’m familiar with, but with a child tablet segment that doesn’t include many models, it’s easy to remember this name. They’ve debuted a new kid-friendly tablet dubbed Sky Tab 2, that runs Android and it’s available in India.

Mitashi-Sky-Tab-2

The price is $115 and the product is listed on the company’s website, but it’s out of the stock for the time being. The Mitashi Sky Tab 2 packs a 7 inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 976 x 600 pixels and Android 4.2 as the OS. There’s a 1 GHz dual core CPU inside, 1 GB of RAM too, 8 GB of storage and a microSD card slot with up to 32 GB of extra storage supported.

The slate has a 2 MP back camera, a 0.3 MP front shooter and a 3300 mAh battery incorporated as well. Every week we learn about a new child-friendly tablet and this week’s model is the Kurio Telekids TAB, shown below. This new model is for sale in Netherlands and this is in fact the seventh Kurio branded model that reaches the Dutch market.

kurio-Telekids-TAB-persbericht

It comes with a protective rubber case, available in several color choices. The Telekids brand is featured proeminently and in spite of the name, there’s no TV channel or service associated with the device. In the end all we get is a 7 inch Android model with a special section for children. The software area features an Internet filter and a special kid-friendly app store, the Kurio App Store.

A nice feature of the Telekids TAB is the Motion one, that relies on the camera to play games similar to the ones on the Nintendo Wii. The moves you make trigger certain in game actions. The product is certainly on the lower end side of the spectrum, with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, a dual core Intel Clover Trail processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. There’s also a microSD card slot, a 0.3 Mp front camera and a 2 MP back shooter.

WiFi and Android 4.4 round up the specs list of the model, that’s priced at just 99 euros.

We owe a great debt to Nickelodeon for making our childhood more beautiful with programs like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, plus they also made the legendary Sponge Bob and now to top it all they debuted their own tablet. This is a device called Nickelodeon Junior and it’s pictured below.

tablette-nickelodeon-630x372

This is a small device, a 7 incher with a dual core 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM, so specs are modest. We also get 4 GB of storage, a microSD card slot with a bundled 8 GB card and a front 0.3 MP camera. We have no idea what the resolution is here, but I expect something more than 800 x 480, probably 1024 x 600 pixels. There’s Android on board, in an unspecified version, as well as 200 apps, of which 21 exclusively available on this slate.

70 games, dozens of TV shows from the famous channel and more are included here. The product has a parental control mode for kids aged 3 to 6 and kids aged 6 to 10 separately. Internet access is also regulated through this, by the way. The product is pretty highly priced, at 129.90 euros, but a brand is a brand after all…

Kurio Xtreme Kids Tablet Gets Reviewed, UI Gets Praise

The kids tablet is a segment that has been relatively popular over the past two years or so, because every major company has tried its hand at it. The thing is that the market is still open for a champion, because there’s no dominant brand in this area. Kurio’s Xtreme Kids Tablet is interesting enough and let’s see what Androidpolice’s review had to say about it.

nexus2cee_wm_IMG_3981

This is an Intel-powered slate, priced at $130 and packing a 7 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display, as well as a 1.2 GHz dual core Intel Atom Z2520 processor and 1 GB of RAM. There’s a 2.1 MP rear camera, a 0.3 MP front shooter, 16 GB of storage, a microUSB port and WiFi on board, as well as Bluetooth 4.0. There’s a 3000 mAh battery inside, Android 4.4 as the OS and the product is available in blue or pink.

nexus2cee_wm_IMG_3987

Sold at Toys R Us, the tablet has a very intuitive user interface, particularly for the little ones. The display is criticized in the review, as well as the sluggish nature of the device. The control layout is very smple, with all the buttons, jacks and ports placed on the right side of the device. We’ve also got a silicone cover for protection and the ability to create a new kid’s profile easily via the Settings menu.

Parental controls must be specified and pre-categorized apps such as games, media, ebooks and more are available. Kurio Xtreme is praised for UI, but criticized for hardware and in the end the user is urged to go with the Amazon Fire HD Kids tablet rather than this model.

The company Findaway entered the public eye about 9 years ago when it launched an audio player with an audiobook on board. It received quite a bit of buzz and got Barnes & Noble to sell it. The product flopped in the holiday season, but them got picked up by libraries. Now the same firm launches a tablet, called Playaway Launchpad and detailed below.

imrs.php

This device is meant for the children’s sections of libraries and it’s supposed to be lent by a library system. Many libraries have started tablet-lending programs with iPads and Android slates, but the Findaway product is supposed to be the first one to be lent by a library system. The Baltimore public library system has picked up 90 Playway tablets and split them between 3 branches.

They also have a 3D printing station and lend video games, so they’re very evolved. The slates come with a pack of themed science, math and reading apps, intended for a varied age group. Findaway worked with Fingerprint, a children’s app company, in order to choose the right applications. Multiple themes are included and the devices are built with tough plastic cases, in order to survive bumps.

VTech Children’s Tablets Get Hacked, Revealing Personal Pictures of Kids

VTech is a tablet maker and they specialize in kids tablets, but they’re going through a bit of a scandal right now, since their devices have been hacked. What’s worse is that the breach revealed personal pictures of the little ones.

Innotab-PINK

The information coming from the hack includes personal data, which also means recordings and photos. Cyber attackers accessed Vtech’s database and stole the children’s personal info, recordings and images. 5 million customers are said to have been affected, but the hacker that started the hack claims that he only accessed chat logs and personal info.

Pictures taken with the cameras are included, according to Vice magazine, that interviewed the hacker. Security expert Troy Hunt learned that all communication via the app was unencrypted, so when a hacker accessed the database, he could read all the info easily. Said info can be traced to usernames and identities, meaning the children and adults can be identified.

VTech has started taking down some of its vulnerable portals, like Learning Lodge, that were affected by the hack. That’s the kind of problem to take down an entire company…

Toy Maker Mattel Will Acquire Fuhu, Maker of Nabi Tablets

$

0

Interestingly, every two weeks or so we see a new tablet for children, although we have no idea if this segment is successful or not. We have no sales numbers and no clear market share, so on paper it should be a good business if products keep coming up. However, today we learn that one of the biggest names in the biz, Fuhu has been acquired.

nabi-2s

Toy maker Mattel has purchased Fuhu, the creator of the Nabi tablet series for children, with business and assets included. Fuhu had previously filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, but thanks to the buyout, it will continue to work as before. The Nabi slates will offer access to the content in the Nabi Shop and App Zone and Fuhu also promises that product warranties won’t be affected.

You may still be able to buy the Nabi tablets at the Walmart and Amazon stores, no problem with that. Nabi’s sale to Mattel is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016, so things could change by then. Mattel being the toy giant it is, could invest serious money into Fuhu and maybe make the Nabi series even better.

Sydney-based firm One Education has been working on a new device, a tablet that can be taken apart by the little ones. The result is called The Infinity and it looks like the model below.

infcover

Its point of inspiration was the One Laptop Per Child initiative and starting from that a device that’s pretty much modular came up. This model has a camera, Bluetooth and WiFi, plus an 8.9 inch touchscreen display, a 1.4 GHz quad core CPU and a keyboard dock. The modularity part means that all parts of the slate slide out of their special chassis placements.

inf

They can be explored by children and that even includes the core parts, battery, hub and screen. Modularity also applies to software, so the device can run Android, Linux, Windows or Chromium OS. There’s also Infinity OS as an option, with apps that help kids learn to code. The price is $249 right now and One Education wants to ship the product in September 2016.

An Indiegogo campaign has already started, raising 40% of the $50.000 goal. Is this the new OLPC XO?
